Inter-Agency Committee on Women and Gender Equality (IACWGE)

Document Actions

Until October 2001, when the United Nations System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB) decided, as part of the reform of its working methods, that coordination should be pursued through more informal and flexible mechanisms rather than formal subsidiary bodies, the Inter-Agency Committee on Women and Gender Equality constituted a forum for consultations and coordination between entities with mandates in women and gender equality on those aspects of their activities that were of mutual concern.

The IACWGE's mandate included:

  • implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women and of gender-related recommendations emanating from other recent UN conferences and summits, especially by ensuring effective co-operation and coordination of the UN system;
  • the mainstreaming of a gender perspective in the work of the system.

To this end, the Committee facilitated action and monitored progress in achieving the gender-related goals of UN conferences in the areas of policy, operational activities, co-ordination, research, training, and public information. It identified emerging issues that required the attention of the system, and prepared practical tools, such as guidelines, background notes, or checklists, to strengthen women-specific activities and increase gender mainstreaming. It compiled good practices and performance indicators to ensure accountability for progress.

The IACWGE met once a year.

Since January 2002, inter-agency coordination in the field of women and gender equality is being carried out by the Inter-Agency Network on Women and Gender Equality (IANWGE) .
